Student housing insecurity has become a growing crisis nationwide and specifically in the University of California system. At the University of California, Santa Barbara, 5% of the population experience housing insecurity (UC Global Food Initiative). Many of these students receive financial aid and have a job, however, a small number receive public or private assistance (Broton, Goldrick-Rab, 2018). Addressing students’ basic needs must be at the forefront of public universities’ attention. Housing instability at higher education institutions has arisen because of a variety of factors. Specifically, the rising cost of living that comes with attending a four year university.

Tucked away in the back of the Isla Vista Food Cooperative’s small storage warehouse is Melissa Cohen’s office. Melissa Cohen is the general manager of the store and has become a central figure in creating a sense of community in Isla Vista. From devastating fires in California and Australia, to bomb cyclones on the East Coast, the effect of human caused climate change is being felt. Every year we are witnessing the effects of climate change with a growing number of extreme weather events, record breaking temperatures, and climate anomalies.

This past month became the warmest January in recorded history with temperatures ranging from 3 to 6-degrees Celsius above average. Much of Northern Europe and the East Coast of the United States have had spring-like temperatures and limited snowfall.
